We purchased the 15" compact fire ring for several reasons. Mostly, it is a small, portable way for us to have a campfire without the use of firewood.
When traveling across the United States, it's important not to take firewood from one state into another. The reason is that the wood may harbor insects or microbes that are damaging to trees or other living things. We don't want to risk spreading harmful entities into areas where they don't exist. Since we don't take wood with us across state lines, we may not have firewood when arriving at the next destination. The gathering of firewood is often not allowed in places where we camp. Also, frequently there are areas where wood fires are not allowed, where there are burn bans.
For these reasons, a wood campfire is a luxury we are not always able to enjoy. We miss that. There is something very peaceful and comforting about sitting around a campfire at night.

In the video, you'll see that we aren't too sure what to make of the square wire mesh screen that comes in the box. We finally located the first-use guide and the instruction guide which explained its purpose. (There were tucked inside the product catalog.)
Even though the lava rocks are baked and cured before shipping, there is the danger that they still may pop during the first use. To prevent injury to the consumer, the wire screen is included for use during a curing procedure. You put the lava rocks inside the fire ring, put the legs down and connect a propane source. Then you light the burner and cover the top of the fire ring with the wire mesh. Set the burner on high and let it run for 15 minutes while keeping a distance of at least 10 feet away. If any of the lava rocks do pop/jump about, the wire screen will help contain them. The wire screen may be discarded after this process.
I am pleasantly surprised and satisfied with the compact fire ring. The lava rocks disperse the flames beautifully, causing them to dance about randomly. The lava rocks warm and provides radiant heat as well. The size is plenty big enough for a nice fire, while still being small enough to carry along on our trips. The carry bag is a welcome inclusion that makes packing the fire ring and its parts super easy.
I am sold on this little propane fire ring. It's a keeper.
